If you’re the least bit interested in comic books, then you’ve probably seen Gerry’s work. After working on numerous projects, including Uncanny Avengers, Gerry was most recently working on Deadpool with Brian Posehn. He sat down with us to talk about Lifetime movies and his ability to time travel.
1. So what are you up to right now?

By day I’m helping curate content for the Nerdist YouTube Channel and at night I’m busy writing TV and comic books. Primarily the new Deadpool series with Brian Posehn, and a thing to be named later for Marvel. Deadpool & The Infinite Horizon are both collected in softcovers, and available digitally. I also have a couple of comics in progress that will be announced later this year for Image Comics.
2. There’s a Wikipedia page for a Gerry Duggan that was born in Dublin in 1910. Is that you? Are you over 100 years old?
Is this a Voight-Kampff test? You don’t think I’m a replicant do you? Until recently I was fine with the dead actor Gerry Duggan’s Wikipedia page, but now Google has matched my Twitter avatar to that Wikipedia entry and it’s become a little creepy. It would be weird to find out I’ve been dead the whole time. And derivative.
3. Do you ever get bored and sketch your comic characters making love like in those awful pop-up ads?
You DO think I’m a replicant! And to answer your question, I’ll pretty much draw anything going into anyone.
4. If you had to pick, what are your top five favorite movies of all time?
For non-stop sheer watchability: The Incredibles, Tombstone, Big Lebowski, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, and Sorcerer. My list of favorite movies changes all the time depending on my mood and the time of year. I watch a lot of horror in the winter, Die Hard during December and noir in the winter. I don’t know why.
5. What were the last three picture messages you’ve received on your phone?
A page from an upcoming comic book, a picture from a shoot, and an obese woman mounting a manatee like she was some Floridian Lady Aquaman.
6. What’s the strangest celebrity encounter you’ve ever had?
The coolest was running into Shepard Fairey in a stairwell just off of a roof – he was stickering. Catching him putting up an OBEY GIANT sticker was a rare urban treat — like actually getting to watch Batman punch a guy. The weirdest was Michael Jackson at a comic shop. He was a regular customer of the shop I used to work at years ago. He would come in, take whatever he wanted and the shop kept track of what was leaving and then the orders would get faxed to “his people.” Then a messenger would arrive with a check. This happened a couple of times a year. A lot of crazy stuff happened at Golden Apple 10 years ago. I recall introducing Joss Whedon to Warren Ellis during the latter’s RED OCTOBER book tour. Neither knew me, but as sergeant of arms of back issue comics I of course, knew them both. Oh, but the best was Chuck Woolery asked the staff not to make a big deal that he was in the store while Samuel L. Jackson was quietly reading and shopping only feet away. That was probably the most Hollywood thing I’ve ever witnessed, and my shadow is still burned into the wall behind the cash register at the old shop from it.
7. Any TV shows that stand out to you right now?
Enjoying the new season of The Killing, I’ll miss Game Of Thrones & Mad Men, and I can’t wait for Breaking Bad. [Note: We conducted this interview over the summer --Ed.] I’m actually going back and enjoying watching some old ’60s Batman with my four year old son every now and again.
8. Who would play you in the inevitable Lifetime movie about your life?
It depends — if I kill someone and I’m the bad guy then Tom Sizemore, but if I’m the one that’s murdered into a Lifetime movie then I hope it’s Aaron Douglas. Are these replicant answers?
9. Who are some of your favorite accounts on Twitter?
I’m going to assume everyone’s following the Patton Oswalts, Kelly Oxfords, the Sarah Thyres & Andy Richters of the world. If not, you should.
@ShittingtonUK does it all – he can make you laugh with a joke, or 25 jokes in an elaborate photoshop. @ChaseMit @MikeDrucker, @Molls, @MattMira and @Kumailn all make me laugh. I also follow a lot of horrible a**holes, waiting to pounce on them, so maybe I don’t know what I’m talking about.
10. Most importantly, what’s your favorite thing about me?
Your tweets are great, but not as great as your not having to go to your son’s birthday party. We gave each other a Saturday off for 3 years in a row. No greater gift. I love you.
